RWA Mozambique: The Transformative Impact of a Bicycle on Assucénia Maraneja’s Farming Journey

By Benilde Manjaze

After benefiting from the bicycle and some vegetable seeds for agricultural production, Assucénia Maraneja, a young member of the RWA in Mozambique, residing in the Boane district of Maputo province, saw the distance between her home and the farm significantly reduced.

Assucénia Maraneja is a young farmer who has been dedicated to vegetable production on an area of about 2 hectares for almost a decade. She is trained in the field of rural extension promotion and started working the land at a young age to help her parents. She was fortunate to receive a bicycle and some vegetable seeds through the government’s program called: Inclusive Agri-food Value Chain Development Program (PROCAVA), a project aimed at accelerating the transformation of the agricultural sector through competitive, inclusive, and sustainable growth of family farming and the private sector in productive value chains, particularly poultry farming.

“Thanks to this bicycle, I can reach my farm in a short time and have the ability to transport more products for family consumption and sale. The beneficiary explained that with the kits she received, she will be able to increase vegetable production and transport her products from the farm to the place of sale more easily.”

“I am very grateful to the PROCAVA project that supported me with this material; this is a way to empower women farmers, and I hope that in the future, they will continue to make gestures like this,” Maraneja explained. She added that “the bicycle has brought significant change to my life. I see that this tool has reduced the number of times I need to go to the farm to transport my products.”

It is important to note that with the bicycle she received, the beneficiary will contribute to reducing economic costs in the transportation of vegetables, providing greater flexibility and agility in the logistics process, as it is an economically viable means of transport for medium and short distances.
