2019 SADC PEOPLE SUMMIT COMMUNIQUE TO THE SADC HEADS OF STATES AND GOVERNMENTS

PRESENTED TO THE INCOMING CHAIRPERSON OF SADC, HIS EXCELLENCY, THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED REPUBLIC OF TANZANIA, JOHN POMBE MAGUFULI, ON THE 16th of AUGUST 2019 at the Tanzania National Museum, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

We, the more than 700 delegates drawn from grassroots social movements, community based organisations, faith based organisations, small scale food producers, women’s organisations, labour, students, youths, children, economic justice, human rights, people with disabilities and other various sectors of social movements gathered at the SADC People Summit convened by the Southern Africa People Solidarity Network (SAPSN) at the National Museum of Tanzania, Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania from the 13th – 17th of August 2019 under the theme “Rebuilding Peoples Movements Within Southern Africa’s Climate, Political and Socio-Economic Emergencies: Towards radical democratic alternatives and a just transition.”

Acknowledging the effort of the outgoing SADC Chair, President His Excellency, President of the Republic of Namibia, Hage Geingob, for opening doors to social movements in general and particularly acknowledging the role of the SAPSN in mobilising citizens of the region to defend their livelihoods, offer alternatives and reclaim their space and voice in the SADC processes;

Appreciating the concerted efforts by the incoming SADC Chair, His Excellency John. P Magufuli, in fighting corruption and directing austerity measures to the government officials and not the ordinary citizens and that his model be replicated in other SADC Member States and Governments.
