The Avaradrano Farmers’ General Assembly was solemnly celebrated in Faravohitra, Anosy Avaratra Municipality, Antananarivo Avaradrano District, from April 23 to April 26, 2026. This major event brought together all 16 municipalities of the district and highlighted the “SANTA-BARY,” a traditional Malagasy practice symbolizing the importance and sacred value of rice in life and culture.
During the event, farmers’ representatives officially offered the first harvest to government authorities as a sign of gratitude and as a symbol of the strong bond between the land and the state. High-level representatives attended on behalf of the President of the Republic, led by Colonel RANDRIANIRINA Michaël, together with the Senior Advisor for Reform, Medical Brigadier General ZAFITASONDY Marcellin, and General RABEARIMANANA Lucien.
Official speeches focused on strengthening food self-sufficiency. It was emphasized that farmers are the backbone of this goal and therefore require strong support, particularly through improved infrastructure such as roads. These are essential to facilitate transport and market access for agricultural products. Farmers were also encouraged to improve their production methods and adopt modern and sustainable farming techniques.
The opening ceremony concluded with visits to exhibition booths, showcasing the agricultural skills and rich production of Avaradrano. This demonstrated that rural Madagascar remains vibrant and continues to develop.
Among the active participants of the Avaradrano Farmers’ General Assembly 2026 was the organization Femmes en Action Rurale de Madagascar (FARM). The organization highlighted the role of rural women through the exhibition and sale of organic products produced by its members.
Beyond showcasing organic products, FARM’s participation also emphasized the importance of preserving traditional agricultural knowledge and practices. The “SANTA-BARY” ceremony itself reflects the cultural and spiritual value of rice in Malagasy society, reminding communities that agriculture is not only an economic activity but also a heritage passed down through generations. FARM therefore supports the preservation of these traditional values while promoting improved and sustainable farming practices.
The event went beyond exhibition activities, as direct sales were also organized, allowing visitors to interact closely with the products and support local production. These products are the result of the hard work and dedication of women farmers within FARM.
According to Dina RAVONIARILALA during a media interview, FARM’s participation carried two key messages: raising awareness about organic products and strengthening the role of women in rural development.
Overall, events like this clearly demonstrate the crucial role of women in agriculture and rural development. FARM, as an organization of women farmers, emphasizes that women are not only participants but also key producers and essential actors in building a sustainable economy, while also safeguarding cultural heritage and traditional farming knowledge.
