RWA Lesotho: Rural Women Rise Through Solidarity Amid Climate Crisis in Lesotho

As climate change continues to intensify across Lesotho, rural women farmers under the banner of Hope for Rural Women Assembly (HRWA) Lesotho are facing devastating impacts caused by heavy and prolonged rainfall. Fields that once promised food and income are now submerged in water. Crops are sinking, seeds are being washed away, and many farming communities fear losing an entire season’s harvest.

For small-scale women farmers, this crisis goes beyond agriculture. It threatens household food security, livelihoods, and the survival of indigenous farming systems that communities have depended on for generations.

Yet, even in the midst of these climate challenges, HRWA women have demonstrated the power of solidarity, resilience, and community-led solutions.

Through agroecology practices, communities are strengthening sustainable farming methods that protect the soil, conserve biodiversity, and improve resilience against climate shocks. Women continue to exchange knowledge on natural farming techniques, seed preservation, and environmentally friendly agricultural practices rooted in indigenous wisdom.

The sharing of natural indigenous seeds has become more than an act of farming. It is an act of resistance, survival, and hope.

As extreme weather events become more frequent, there is an urgent need for greater support towards women-led agroecology initiatives, climate adaptation programs, and the protection of indigenous seed systems.
