A four-day roadshow culminating in a gathering of women from several corners of the province was how Mawubuye activists in the Western Cape commemorated World Food Day and International Rural Women’s Day.

Comrades Reinette Heunis and Denia Jansen led the team with the first day of activities held in Genadendal on Tuesday 16 October, followed by Riviersonderend, then Suurbraak, McGregor, Robertson and finally, a family celebration event in Swellendam on Saturday 20th.

“The roadshow was a partnership involving Mawubuye, the Breede-Gouritz Water Catchment Agency (BGWCA), and the Rural Women’s Assembly,” Denia Jansen explained.

The focus at each event was on water, food, gardens and seeds.

Starting off in Genadendal, women activists came together to share their successes as well as challenges around their access to land, water and food security

“Many women came because women have a unique relationship with water, land and food so we tried to link this relationship with Genadendal women,” said Denia.

For the BGWCA, each event of the roadshow gave them an ideal opportunity to engage with small farmers and land activists about different kinds of water rights; how small scale farmers can access precious water sources and also how people can apply for support and funds from the agency.
