Background/Challenge
In Tanzania, Women access to land especially in rural areas is a critical issue, impacting their economic empowerment, social standing and overall wellbeing .While legal framework recognize women right to land, but various challenges hinder the implementation including social cultural norms, lack of awareness, discrimination in land governance, economic constraints and limited access to information and legal assistance.
Actions Taken:
In response to the identified challenge, Tanzania Rural Women Assembly (TRWA), take land as a key agenda in order to empower women on land access through dialogue meetings in order to bring awareness and education to the members, which help members better understand and claim their rightful access to land.
Impact:
These dialogues have brought a significant change to the community, particularly regarding land access. For example in the Njombe region, a woman named Zaituni Myinga received two acres of land from her husband, granting her full freedom to cultivate and produce whatever she chooses. This marks a significant cultural change, as such changes for women over land is not traditionally common in the area.
Conclusion:
Finally; Zaituni expressed their appreciation for the forum, after giving an opportunity to participate in different dialogues and being among of the members who benefited with the forum’s efforts and impact.
