RWA Malawi: Strengthening Climate Resilience Through Community Action in Mchinji

Building on its ongoing climate resilience initiatives across Malawi, the Rural Women Assembly (RWA) Malawi continued its efforts to support communities affected by climate-related disasters through awareness raising and the promotion of sustainable agricultural practices. In June 2026, RWA Malawi conducted a Climate Resilience Awareness Meeting in Mchinji District, targeting communities under Traditional Authority Kawere and Senior Group Village Head Kaigwazanga, areas that were severely affected by floods.

The floods caused significant damage to homes, crops, livestock, school materials, and other household property, leaving many families vulnerable and increasing the risk of food insecurity. Recognizing the need for both immediate support and long-term solutions, RWA Malawi brought together traditional leaders, government officials, community structures, and more than 900 community members, including women, men, and young people, to discuss practical ways of building resilience against future climate shocks.

During the meeting, participants were sensitized on climate change adaptation and disaster resilience strategies. Discussions focused on irrigation farming, the use of organic fertilizers, cultivation of climate-resilient indigenous crops, tree planting, climate-smart agriculture, and participation in village savings and loans groups. These approaches were highlighted as practical and sustainable measures that communities can adopt to strengthen food security and improve livelihoods.

Community members welcomed the knowledge shared during the meeting and expressed their commitment to applying the lessons learned. Traditional leaders commended RWA Malawi for empowering communities with practical skills and information and called for continued support in strengthening resilience to climate change and future disasters.

As part of the organization’s response to the disaster, RWA Malawi also distributed eight bags of local maize seed to households affected by the floods in Kaigwazanga Village on 19 June 2026. The distribution brought together beneficiaries, traditional leaders, community members, and representatives from RWA Malawi.

During the event, the Chairlady of RWA Malawi, Emily Phazi, emphasized the importance of indigenous seed varieties in responding to climate change and improving household food security. She encouraged beneficiaries to plant the seed, preserve part of their harvest for future planting seasons, and share seed with other community members to promote sustainability and community resilience.

Traditional leaders welcomed the intervention and pledged to work closely with beneficiaries to ensure that the seeds are used for their intended purpose. Senior Group Village Head Kaigwazanga expressed appreciation for RWA Malawi’s support and reaffirmed his commitment to promoting traditional farming practices and supporting women farmers within the community.

Beneficiaries expressed gratitude for the assistance, noting that the local maize seed would help them recover from losses caused by the floods while improving food production and household food security. The intervention reflects RWA Malawi’s continued commitment to empowering rural communities with the knowledge, resources, and support needed to adapt to climate change and build lasting resilience.
