May 21, 2025, marked a significant day for the Rural Women Assembly (RWA) members in Mchinji, Malawi. Undeterred by the challenges posed by Gender-Based Violence (GBV), these courageous women organized a awareness campaign that brought together local leaders, community members, and villagers from three surrounding villages.
The meeting was a beacon of hope, shining light on the often-hidden issue of GBV. RWA members took to the stage, sharing their personal stories and experiences, and educating participants about the various forms of GBV. The discussion was poignant, highlighting the importance of safe transitions, particularly during the seed-buying and selling season – a time when women are often most vulnerable.
But the event was more than just a discussion – it was a call to action. RWA members passionately advocated for a peaceful season, one where women could make their own financial decisions without fear of abuse or intimidation. The message resonated deeply with the audience, who listened intently and asked thoughtful questions.
The event drew an impressive 84 attendees, including 18 men, 52 women, and 14 youths. Traditional Authority Pitala, who graciously attended the event, expressed heartfelt gratitude to the RWA women for organizing the awareness campaign. “This initiative has the potential to curb abuse and promote reporting,” he acknowledged. “We must work together to create a safer, more just society for all.”
The RWA Mchinji’s GBV awareness campaign was a powerful reminder that change begins with a single step – or in this case, a single voice. By breaking the silence and speaking out against GBV, these remarkable women inspired a community to take action and demand a better future for themselves and their loved ones.
